Asbestos Exposure

Exposure to asbestos can lead to serious and incurable life-threatening illnesses. Asbestos fibers are microscopic but extremely durable and fire resistant.  For years, asbestos was used in a number of commercial capacities.  Health hazards from asbestos have been commonly recognized in workers exposed in the shipbuilding industry, asbestos milling, manufacturing of asbestos tiles and other products, insulation work, brake repair, demolition workers, drywall removers, and a variety of other trades.

There are two major lung conditions traced directly to asbestos exposure.

  • Asbestosis
  • Mesothelioma

Asbestosis is a degenerative and long-term respiratory condition.  Asbestos fibers can cause scar tissue (fibrosis) to form inside the lung. Scarred lung tissue does not expand and contract normally, which leads to breathing difficulties.  The severity of the disease depends on how long the person was exposed to asbestos and the amount he or she breathed in.

Mesothelioma is a much more serious condition.  It is a rare and aggressive cancer of the lungs.  Mesothelioma is typically recognized as the most clearly attributable disease resulting from asbestos exposure.

For decades, the companies that made and sold asbestos and asbestos products knowing that asbestos could kill – yet they did nothing to protect people from exposure. These corporate decisions were unconscionable and the consequences have been devastating.

Many people may show no signs of illness for a long time after their first exposure.   It can take from 10-40 years for symptoms of an asbestos-related injury to appear. As a result, many states have passed laws allowing people to file lawsuits after their injury is diagnosed.  However, these times vary and are short.
