Zantac

Savannah Zantac Lawsuit Attorneys

Protecting People Harmed by Dangerous Drugs

If you’ve ever experienced heartburn, you may have chosen Zantac for treatment. Zantac, known generically as ranitidine, is the most popular heartburn drug available. However, the use of the medication is declining because of its association with the development of cancer.

The Tate Law Group, LLC legal team represents people who were diagnosed with cancer due to the regular use of Zantac or other ranitidine medications. Contact our Savannah Zantac lawsuit lawyers if you or a loved one is interested in filing a claim.

Is Zantac Contaminated?

The risks of Zantac use are linked to a fundamental flaw in the drug’s chemical composition, rather than contamination from an outside source.

As of December 2019, the true nature of the medication’s reactions within the body is still being researched by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is believed that ranitidine interacts with naturally present enzymes in the stomach and forms N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical that has been identified as a probable carcinogen. Valisure, a web-based pharmaceutical company, released the research which started the recent conversation about Zantac and cancer. The FDA is still looking into the issue and testing different types of the drug for NDMA.

The Dangers of Zantac Use

NDMA is known as an environmental contaminant. It has been associated with the development of cancer. Although there is not a single, specific type of cancer that has been linked to Zantac use, the drug could primarily impact digestive organs as the medication is ingested.

People who have used Zantac regularly, and for an extended period of time, are the most at risk for developing cancer. Although the risks of ranitidine ingestion increase with frequent use, NDMA levels in the body can potentially rise to dangerous levels following only a few months of use.

The use of Zantac has been linked to conditions such as:

  • Stomach cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Small intestine cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer

The Zantac Recall

In response to claims of Zantac’s side effects, manufacturers of ranitidine drugs voluntarily recalled their products. Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture ranitidine drugs include Sanofi, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Amneal, and others.

In addition to the manufacturer recalls, certain varieties of Zantac were recalled by Walgreens, CVS, Kroger, Target, Rite-Aid, Walmart, and other stores. Zantac and other forms of ranitidine can no longer be purchased in many stores across the country.

Should I Stop Taking Zantac?

Although Zantac has been pulled from store shelves and labeled as potentially dangerous, the FDA is not recommending that patients completely stop the use of the drug without first consulting their doctor. It is best to discuss the risks and benefits of continuing the use of the drug before changing your treatment plan.

There are multiple heartburn treatment drugs that do not contain ranitidine available to consumers. The FDA reported that their “tests of samples of alternatives such as Pepcid (famotidine), Tagamet (cimetidine), Nexium (esomeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole) and Prilosec (omeprazole) show no NDMA in the medicines to date.”

People who are regular users of Zantac or other ranitidine drugs may have a case against pharmaceutical companies. There is evidence to support ranitidine’s link to NDMA and resulting cancer diagnoses.
